The Trump administration should provide strong, unequivocal support for the Palestinian people in conquering their most deadly enemy. No, that’s not the Israelis. It’s the gang of murderous thugs known as Hamas, the brutal Islamist fanatics who rule over Gaza. Hamas rejects all calls for negotiation, embraces terrorist violence as a holy cause, and rejects the idea of any sort of Jewish state, regardless of borders.
Until the Palestinian Authority manages to dislodge Hamas and to replace their rule with more responsible forces, any agreements with Israel would mean nothing. Why should Israelis make concessions to one faction of Palestinians, when the other faction insists on continuing the construction of terror tunnels and the launching of deadly rockets against kindergartens?
The Trump team will see that the only meaningful “two state solution” requires first turning the two Palestinian mini-states into a single, unified, functional entity that can pursue meaningful negotiations for peace and security.
Michael, I don’t think a two-state solution is possible any time soon. In fact, it may never be possible.
I agree that Hamas must be removed from power but what will replace Hamas is not clear. Dr. Mordecai Kedar has proposed that Gaza be run as an emirate controlled by 7 or 8 (I believe it is) powerful clans. He believes that this is the only type of governance that can work.
I think that it will take a generation or two to re-educate the people from their anti-Israel, jihadist brainwashing and replace their conditioned beliefs with something more moderate and in line with with what’s happening in Saudi Arabia today.
This is the only way that these people will be able to live with Israelis.
